Yankees' Gio Urshela awarded walk after three balls vs. Tigers

New York Yankees third baseman Gio Urshela benefitted from a mix-up over the count on Friday night against the Detroit Tigers, drawing a walk after just three balls.

Urshela came to the plate in the sixth inning, and after fouling off several pitches on a 2-2 count, the next pitch from Tigers pitcher Kyle Funkhouser was outside and rolled to the backstop. Urshela then tossed his bat and jogged to first base, with no one on the Tigers arguing that only three balls were thrown.

"It was a missed count," crew chief Jerry Meals said after the game, according to ESPN. "He went to first on three balls."

The Yankees did not score in the inning and eventually lost 3-2 in extra innings.

Friday's loss dropped the Yankees to 29-22. New York remains third in the AL East behind the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.
