New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil is expected to begin a throwing program on Wednesday or Thursday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Monday.
That marks a significant step in his recovery from a high-grade right lat strain. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year, Gil has been sidelined since late February after experiencing shoulder tightness during a bullpen session.
He received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection on March 6 and was placed on the 60-day injured list. The team anticipates his return to the rotation around June, assuming no setbacks during his rehabilitation.
That is some much-needed positive progress news for the Yankees, whose starting rotation has been plagued by injuries.
Ace Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery in March and is out for the season. Marcus Stroman was recently placed on the 15-day injured list due to left knee inflammation. Clarke Schmidt is set to finally make his season debut this week after recovering from shoulder fatigue.
Even when healthy, Stroman pitched to an 11.57 ERA, and the rest of the rotation, outside of Max Fried, has not been much better. Carlos Rodón is susceptible to home runs, which is a real issue in the AL East. He has a 5.48 ERA with 12 walks in 23 innings pitched. Will Warren finally looked like a big league starter in his third start, but he has a 5.14 ERA so far. Carlos Carrasco is a shell of his former self with a 7.71 ERA.
Fried, a recent free-agent acquisition, has been a bright spot, posting a 1.56 ERA over his first three starts and is carrying the team.
The Yankees' rotation has the worst collective ERA in the majors (5.40).
