Yankees GM Brian Cashman: 'Shortstop is an area of need'

The New York Yankees confirmed widely reported news Tuesday that Aaron Boone will remain the club's manager through at least the early days of the 2022 MLB season, but general manager Brian Cashman had more to say while speaking with reporters.

Per ESPN and the Associated Press, Cashman announced the Bronx Bombers will look to address the shortstop position this fall and/or winter. Such a declaration had been expected since Boone shifted Gleyber Torres over to second base in September after Torres struggled defensively at shortstop.

"Bottom line, shortstop is an area of need," Cashman admitted. "I think Gleyber is best served at second base."

The Yankees couldn't have picked a better offseason to bolster the position, less than 12 full months after the New York Mets completed a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Indians for four-time All-Star Francisco Lindor. As Ryan Fagan noted for Sporting News, Carlos Correa of the Houston Astros, Corey Seager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies star Trevor Story and Javier Baez of none other than the previously mentioned Mets are among big-name shortstops set to be available once to-be free agents can sign new contracts.

Also on Tuesday, SNY's Andy Martino linked Baez with a potential return to the Mets. Baez and Lindor have been friends since before their time together with the Amazins.
