Yankees’ Home Run Barrage By The Numbers

Nights like Tuesday night don’t come around that often, even if your team’s nickname is The Bronx Bombers. So, after the Yankees launched a franchise record-tying nine home runs against the Tampa Bay Rays, let’s dive deeper into all the historical implications of their performance.

First up, as you have heard many times, including in the last paragraph, the Yankees hit nine home runs Tuesday night, tying the franchise record they set back in…March of this year. March 29th to be precise.

That leads us to the next bit of history. They are the only team in history to have two nine-home run games in the same season. The Yankees now have two of the four nine-home run games in MLB history. (The Toronto Blue Jays set the record with 10 on September 14, 1987).

Manager Aaron Boone has actually been part of three of the four nine-plus home run games, as, in addition to being The Bombers’ coach for their two games, he also hit the first home run of the Reds’ nine-homer barrage on September 4, 1999. (Thank you to Sarah Langs for the stats).

Next up, the Yankees had three players with multi-homer performances. Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger and Jose Caballero joined Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Bill “Moose” Skowron as the only trios in Bombers history to all turn this trick in the same game. The M&M Boys and Skowron did it on May 30, 1961.

The Yankees are now the third team in MLB history to have three games in a single season during which they hit back-to-back-to-back home runs. They join the 2024 Dodgers and 1982 Brewers in that particular club. (Thank you to Katie Sharp for the stats).

Aaron Judge’s first-inning blast gave him 40 homers on the year, his fourth time reaching that plateau in a single season. That ties Judge with Mantle for the third most 40-homer seasons in Bombers’ history. Only Babe Ruth (11) and Lou Gehrig (5) had more. (Thank you to Bryan Hoch for the stats).

Speaking of Aaron Judge, he and Stanton have now homered in the same game for the Yankees (including playoffs) 55 times. The team’s combined record in those contests is 48-7. (Thank you to Jeff Quagliata for the stats). Judge and Stanton are now one behind Mantle and Yogi Berra for the second most such games in Yankees history. Ruth and Gehrig hold the record with 75.

By hitting nine homers, this is now the first season in Yankees’ history where the team hit seven or more homers in a game multiple times.

Thanks to Judge, Bellinger and Stanton’s back-to-back-to-back blasts in the first inning, the Yankees now own two of the three instances in MLB history during which three former MVPs hit consecutive home runs. Their other time was when Paul Goldschmidt, Bellinger and Judge did so back on March 29th. Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers are the only other trio of MVPs to turn this trick and they did it on August 31, 2024.

When Jose Caballero hit his first home run of the game, he became the 657th player to ever hit a home run in a Yankees’ uniform. That's two homers shy of the total that Babe Ruth hit during his entire career with the Yankees.

The 2025 Yankees also joined the 2019 Twins and 2005 Rangers as the only teams to have multiple eight-plus homer games in a single season.

By hitting nine home runs on the road, the Bombers broke their franchise record for most homers away from The Bronx. (Their previous record was eight, set on June 28, 1939, when they visited the Philadelphia Athletics).

Phew! That’s a lot of history!
