Yankees immediately send promising pitching prospect back to Triple-A after promotion
David Frerker-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees have been actively managing their bullpen dynamics to navigate through injuries and maintain overall health. Recently, they brought up 24-year-old Yoendrys Gomez, who made a notable appearance on Friday by striking out all three batters faced in a single inning.

Yoendrys Gomez’s Brief Stint and Development Needs

Despite his successful outing, it appears the Yankees still see areas for Gomez to develop, as they opted to send him back down to Triple-A Scranton shortly after his appearance.

In the minor leagues this season, Gomez has maintained a 3.62 ERA across 27.1 innings, demonstrating a strong ability to strike out batters with an average of 10.87 strikeouts per nine innings. He also holds an 81.4% left-on-base rate and a 41.9% ground ball rate. However, Gomez struggles with control, as evidenced by his high walk rate of 5.93 per nine innings. His brief stint in 2023 with the Yankees was flawless, pitching two perfect innings.

Managing Yankees Prospects and Roster Moves

The Yankees are fortunate to have a reservoir of capable arms in Triple-A, with Gomez representing a valuable asset waiting in the wings. With only one minor league option left, the next time Gomez is called up, the Yankees will likely need to keep him in the majors to avoid risking losing him through waivers. This strategy underscores the delicate balance of developing talent while managing roster flexibility.
