Yankees Insider Names Possible Pitching Additions Before Deadline

The Yankees’ 2025 pitching story so far this season has been a happy surprise. Despite losing ace Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery, watching 2024 AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil benched with a lat strain, and seeing Marcus Stroman sidelined since April with a knee injury, the Bronx Bombers still boast a rotation ERA that’s fifth-best in the American League at 3.45.

Their bullpen has been without the Devin Williams they thought they were getting in last winter's trade. Still, it maintains a respectable 3.29 ERA, ranking fourth in the AL.

So yes, pitching has held strong, but general manager Brian Cashman lives by the motto that you can never have enough pitching.

“But adding to the pitching is important,” Cashman said on Sunday's edition of The Front Office on SiriusXM's MLB Network Radio.

So, as the July trade deadline looms, the Yankees are eyeing some realistic arms to fill in the gaps, NJ.com Yankees beat writer Randy Miller reports.

Among the candidates: Angels southpaw Tyler Anderson, who’s pitched 10 starts with a 3.60 ERA; Reds right-hander Nick Martinez, sporting a 3.43 ERA across 10 starts but carrying a 2-5 record that might make teams nervous; and Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan, quietly racking up 15 saves with a stingy 2.41 ERA over 19 games.

Those names are not going to send Yankees' fans running to secure their World Series tickets like a Sandy Alcantara or Zac Gallen would, but they fit. If the Yankees can get an Alcantara or Gallen at the right price, there is no doubt Cashman would jump on that deal.

But the Yankees have found a balance in a season already battered by injuries, and they want to keep it. Adding dependable arms before the stretch run could be the difference between winning a playoff series or going home early.
