Yankees lose hitting coach just three months after hiring him

Sean Casey is leaving his job as the New York Yankees hitting coach.

The Yankees hired the 49-year-old former first baseman in July after letting go of Dillon Lawson, who had been the team's hitting coach since 2022. Casey was teammates with New York manager Aaron Boone for five-plus seasons with the Cincinnati Reds from 1998-2003 before the latter was sent to the Yankees at the 2003 trade deadline.

Boone and Casey were roommates with the Reds in 1999 as well.

The three-time All-Star's deal with New York was for the rest of the 2023 campaign, which gave both sides the opportunity to assess how they liked the relationship together. It was Casey's first coaching gig.

The Yankees were 49-42 and in fourth place in the AL East when "The Mayor" began his work and finished the season still in fourth with an 82-80 mark. It was the first time since 2016 that the Bronx Bombers didn't make the playoffs.

New York was fifth in home runs, but 29th in hits and tied for 29th in team batting average (.231) when Casey was hired. The Yankees ended the year ninth in home runs (219), 29th in hits (1,207) and 29th in batting average (.227)

Casey made his big-league debut in 1997 with the Cleveland then-Indians and was traded to the Reds just before the 1998 season. Casey made all three of his All-Star teams during his seven-plus years in Cincinnati, before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in December 2005. He announced his retirement following the 2008 season, during which he played 69 games with the Boston Red Sox

Casey was a baseball analyst for MLB Network and worked as a Reds color commentator prior to joining the Yankees.
