Yankees lose to Red Sox in hideous fashion, blowing 4-0 lead in eighth inning

The New York Yankees have struggled mightily this year. However, their season might have hit a new low on Sunday afternoon against the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox.

Yankees starter Domingo Germán got through seven innings at Fenway Park without allowing a hit. New York was up 4-0 until the game was turned upside down in the eighth inning, with Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo hitting a leadoff double off Germán, wrecking his shot at history.

Yanks manager Aaron Boone decided to pull Germán after Verdugo's double, replacing him with Jonathan Loaisiga, who gave up a double to Hunter Renfroe and singles to Christian Vazquez and Franchy Cordero.

Enrique Hernandez then doubled and the Yankees replaced Loaisiga with Zach Britton. Britton was able to get two outs, but they were an RBI groundout and sac fly.

The Red Sox's monster eighth inning propelled them to a 5-4 lead entering the ninth.

Matt Barnes entered to close out the game for Boston, allowing just one hit and securing the save in what was an incredible come-from-behind victory for the Red Sox.

The Yankees fell to 51-47 on the season with the loss, nine games behind the Red Sox for first in the AL East. Many are calling it New York's worst loss of the season, and rightfully so.

After the game, Boone was asked how the team would respond after another tough loss. He said the Yankees have "handled and dealt with adversity" and knows they'll bounce back, according to Sports Illustrated's Max Goodman.
