Yankees Lose Top 30 Prospect in Rule 5 Draft

The New York Yankees were the hunted during the Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings in Nashville, as they lost three players in the Major League portion and four more in the minor league portion.

Three prospects the Yankees opted not to protect on their 40-man roster were selected in the Major League portion, which requires the selecting team to put that player on their 40-man roster immediately.

The Oakland Athletics selected pitcher Mitch Spence with their pick. The Kansas City Royals selected pitcher Matt Sauer, who was a Top 30 Yankees prospect. And, the Texas Rangers selected pitcher Carson Coleman.

Three of the 10 players selected in the MLB portion were Yankees prospects.

In the minor league portion, the stakes are much lower. Players selected in the MLB portion require a $100,000 fee. Players selected in the minor league portion only require a fee up to $15,000.

Still, other teams came to the Yankees for talent.

In the first round, the Los Angeles Angels selected first baseman Eric Wagaman, the Boston Red Sox selected catcher Michael Gasper and the Tampa Bay Rays selected pitcher Michae Gomez. In the third round the Pittsburgh Pirates selected Marcos Cabrera.

The Yankees did pick two players in the minor league portion. In the first round they selected Colorado pitcher Gabriel Barbosa, a 21-year-old righ-hander who is 20-16 in four minor-league seasons after he was signed out of Brazil.

In the second round the Yankees picked Houston pitcher Kerwin Castro, a right-hander who has MLB experience with the San Francisco Giants and the Chicago Cubs. He pitched with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate in Iowa in 2023.
