Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for the New York Yankees, they did.
The Yankees announced they have placed starting pitcher Carlos Rodón on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation.
This update is especially concerning given Rodón underwent left elbow surgery during the offseason to remove loose bodies and shave down a bone spur. The procedure delayed the start of his season until May. Since returning, the 33-year-old has made nine starts.
Rodón has pitched well for New York, going 4-2 with a 3.30 ERA over 46.1 innings. He's struck out 52 batters while posting a 1.25 WHIP.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 3, 2026
• Reinstated INF Ryan McMahon (#19) from the 10-day injured list.
• Returned OF Trent Grisham (#12) from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list.
• Placed LHP Carlos Rodón on the…
Rodón's injury is the last thing the Yankees needed. They've lost seven straight games and fallen four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Their starting rotation has been the team's biggest strength while the offense has completely fallen apart.
The Yankees are hitting just .137 during their losing streak while averaging only 2.43 runs per game. The loss of captain Aaron Judge has finally started to catch up with them after they managed to stay afloat during the first few weeks following his June 5 injured list (retroactive to June 2) stint.
New York is also without ace Max Fried, who has been sidelined since May 13 with a left elbow bone bruise. Fried is scheduled to throw a bullpen session soon, while Judge still doesn't have a timetable for his return.
As for who could replace Rodón, pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez appears to be a leading candidate. Rodriguez has made four starts in the majors this season, going 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA.
Rodón's timetable remains unknown until manager Aaron Boone provides an update, however, elbow injuries are always concerning. They're even more alarming for a pitcher coming off elbow surgery.
Unfortunately for Rodón, injuries are nothing new. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and missed time with a forearm strain in 2023. Both injuries sidelined him for extended periods.
While the Yankees have struggled, the division-rival Rays have surged, winning eight straight games. A four-game deficit isn't impossible to overcome in early July, but if the Yankees continue to spiral, that gap could grow much larger before they know it.
In addition to placing Rodón on the IL, the Yankees reinstated center fielder Trent Grisham and third baseman Ryan McMahon from the shelf. They also optioned Oswaldo Cabrera back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
