Yankees Make Pitching Announcement Before Pivotal Athletics Series

Another day, another New York Yankees pitching change.

Ahead of a pivotal series against the Athletics in Sacramento, the Yankees announced they outrighted veteran starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. The Yankees designated Carrasco, a former 18-game winner with the Cleveland Guardians, for assignment earlier this week.

Although Carrasco has accrued enough service time to decline the assignment and become a free agent, he hadn’t done so at publication.

We nonetheless may have seen the last of Carrasco on a big-league mound, at least in a Yankees uniform. The 38-year-old posted a 5.91 ERA and -0.3 bWAR across 32 innings for the Bronx Bombers after earning a rotation spot out of spring training.

In hindsight, perhaps the Yankees shouldn’t have been too shocked. Carrasco is 8-20 with a 6.14 ERA and -2.9 bWAR over the last three years.

It’s unclear what the Yankees’ rotation looks like going forward. Luis Gil (lat) and Marcus Stroman (knee) remain out indefinitely, and Stroman’s own Yankees career may be numbered following a dreadful start and continued feuds with management.

Will Warren owns a 5.65 ERA and 34-15 K-BB ratio across 28.2 innings. Former Atlanta Braves starter Allan Winans figures to earn a promotion at some point, especially after recording 24 strikeouts over 14 scoreless innings at Triple-A.

Luckily for the Yankees, Max Fried is the AL Cy Young favorite with a 1.05 ERA through 51.2 innings. Carlos Rodón is also pitching his best ball as a Yankee, carrying a 2.96 ERA into Saturday’s start against the surprising A’s.
