Yankees Manager Hints at Potential Infield Shake-Up After Brutal Loss

Jazz Chisholm Jr. made another off-target throw from third base on Tuesday, and by the end of the day, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was facing questions about shaking up his infield.

He was asked point-blank if he would move Chisholm back to second and put DJ LeMahieu back at third.

Boone didn’t dismiss the idea.

"We'll talk through all that stuff," Boone said.

That alone raised eyebrows. And YES Network analyst Jack Curry noticed right away.

“If Aaron Boone hears something in his press conference that is never having a chance of happening,” Curry said during the postgame, “he would probably deflect it or swat it away. And he didn’t swat that potential switch away.”

Instead, Boone opened the door. And the Yankees might be walking through it soon.

“When you look at Jazz Chisholm at third base, he obviously has the athleticism and the instinct to play it,” Curry said, “but our own David Cone has talked about how comfortable he is at second base. He was probably a Gold Glove second baseman. And we’ve seen DJ LeMahieu at third base before.”

Third base is more about reaction and arm strength, while second base asks for more range and footwork. In other words, Curry pointed out, Chisholm’s athleticism might actually play better at second, where he’s already won over evaluators in the past.

And what about that throwing motion?

“Jazz is good, enormous talent,” YES Network host Bob Lorenz said, “but he has a tendency to drop down."

Chisholm dropped his arm down on the fourth-inning throw to try and get Toronto left-fielder Davis Schneider, and it resulted in the ball getting by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Minutes later, Andres Gimenez cleared the bases with a home run to exploit the mistake.

The Yankees moved Chisholm to third when LeMahieu returned from the injured list. Part of the thinking was to help LeMahieu, who is in the final two years of his $90 million contract with the Yankees, feel more comfortable. They also thought it would be easier to find a second baseman on the trade market if LeMahieu couldn't cut it.

The Yankees' defense has been suspect during this June swoon that has now extended into July.

Moving  Chisholm could help.
