Yankees May Not Add a Starter at Deadline, Says MLB Insider

Since spring training, when Gerrit Cole went down for the season and they lost Luis Gil, the belief was the New York Yankees would be scouring the trade market for starting pitching.

Don't count on that, New York Post columnist Jon Heyman said on the MLB Network Monday.

He said the Yankees' rotation is in "great shape right now," led by Max Fried and Carlos Rodón with Clarke Schmidt rolling through 25 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

"They don’t need to start pitching at the moment," Heyman said on Monday on the MLB Network.  "Obviously, things can change. But that’s a great position to be in."

Heyman explained it's a great position to be in because he doesn't believe there will be that many starting pitching options available at the deadline.

The Yankees also see the return of Luis Gil, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, as equivalent to acquiring a starting pitcher at the trade deadline.

Instead, the Yankees’ deadline focus appears to be on the bullpen, despite ranking eighth in MLB with a 3.46 ERA. While that number is respectable, Heyman suggested the front office is aiming higher.

"Their bullpen is pretty good… but that is where their emphasis is going to be. The focus will be on the pen, no question about it," he said.

. The Yankees have been linked to several potential late-inning options, and Heyman’s comments reinforce that the team sees relief pitching as its most urgent need.

In short, while fans love to dream about deadline blockbusters, this year might be more about bullpen reinforcements and marginal upgrades than any rotation shake-up.

And with the way their starters are throwing, that’s not a bad thing.
