Yankees Officially Sign Marcus Stroman to Two-Year Contract
Patrick Gorski-USA TODAY Sports

One of the New York Yankees’ biggest objectives this offseason was to improve their starting pitching. They have now done just that, signing Marcus Stroman to a two-year contract. Stroman’s deal also has a conditional player option for the 2026 season. With this, the New York native is coming home.

Stroman said in a statement, “I’m ready. Can’t wait to put on THE PINSTRIPES and feel the energy in Yankee Stadium.” He added, “Honored to put on the uniform. Very very honored. Will compete to the highest degree for you all. The authentic confidence and swagger I play with is a direct result of growing up in New York culture.”

The Yankees have not shared the terms of the deal at the time of this writing. However, according to MLB.com, Stroman’s deal guarantees him $37 million and another $18 million for 2026 if he pitches 140 innings during the 2025 campaign.

Stroman, 32, had been connected to the Yankees for a decent portion of the offseason. It is understandable, as he was one of the top pitchers available in free agency this year, and the Yankees needed more arms in their rotation.

In 27 games last season with the Chicago Cubs, Stroman had a 10-9 record and a 3.95 ERA. He was also named to his second career All-Star Game.

Stroman’s Fit With the Yankees

When looking at the Yankees’ rotation, it is clear that Stroman will fit in its top half. Gerrit Cole will once again be the team’s ace, but Stroman could be their second or third starter. In either scenario, the Yankees’ rotation is getting a big-time boost with this Stroman addition.

A major reason for the Yankees’ struggles last season was their inconsistent pitching. The hope is now that Stroman will help change things on that front in 2024. If he replicates his stuff from last season, he should do just that.

Yankees DFA Outfielder

To make room on their 40-man roster for Stroman, the Yankees have designated Oscar Gonzalez for assignment.

The Yankees claimed Gonzalez off of waivers from the Cleveland Guardians last month. In 145 career MLB games over two seasons, he has 13 home runs, 55 RBIs, and a .269 batting average.
