After losing in the World Series last year, the New York Yankees are fighting to stay in first place in the American League East.
They lost their second game in a row and fourth in their last six on Sunday when they fell to the Tampa Bay Rays by a final score of 7-5. Tampa Bay scored the first five runs of the game, but right fielder Cody Bellinger helped spark a Yankees rally that gave them a chance to win.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, he hit a two-run home run to put them on the board. It was the 200th homer of his career, and the Yankees honored this individual milestone with a post on Instagram.
"200 Career Homers," the caption read.
"Congrats, @cody_bellinger"
Bellinger is struggling to start this season. He's batting a very poor .200, but he does already have 18 RBIs in 31 games.
His career got off to a sparkling start as a rookie in 2017 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. That year, he batted .267 and hit 97 RBIs and 39 home runs while earning an All-Star berth.
He helped the Dodgers reach the World Series that year, where they fell to the Houston Astros in seven games. In 2019, he was named the National League MVP, and the following year, he got a world championship ring with Los Angeles.
The Yankees acquired Bellinger over the winter in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, the team he spent the previous two seasons with. The hope is that he will provide some of the firepower the Yankees lost when Juan Soto stunningly decided to sign with the New York Mets during the offseason.
