New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone shared an update, as the team appears to be close to getting two of their key rotation pieces back, with Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon both targeting outings in Somerset in the coming days.

According to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, Rodon is set to throw live batting practice in Somerset on Saturday. Cole, meanwhile, is going through a bullpen session on Wednesday, with his next outing, coming either a game or live batting practice, will likely be coming Friday, also in Somerset.

Rodon’s path back has not been without bumps. He experienced right hamstring tightness during his throwing program in late March, creating uncertainty around his timeline. Boone indicated, however, that the issue was more of a scare than a setback. Rodon threw 50 pitches in a live batting practice session on Monday, with a rehab appearance now seemingly within reach.

The 33-year-old is returning from elbow surgery to remove bone chips back in October of last year. He was one of the better pitchers in the American League last year, going 18-9 with a 3.09 earned run average in a career-high 33 starts, earning his third career All-Star selection. His only struggle last year came in the postseason, where in two starts, he coughed up nine runs over 8.1 innings. He looks to avenge his postseason performance by returning to full health and taking on 2026.

Cole is recovering from Tommy John surgery back in March 2025, and has been progressing well since. The 35-year-old threw 42 pitches in a live batting practice session against High-A Hudson Valley hitters Sunday, a strong sign that his return is near. A six-time All-Star and 2023 AL Cy Young award winner, Cole’s presence atop the rotation would give New York arguably the most formidable one-two punch in the AL.

The news is welcome to Yankees fans, as the team has found itself in a bit of a rut after starting the season 8-2 through their first 10 games on April 7. Since then, they have a record of 1-6, down to a 9-8 record prior to Wednesday’s game, one game behind the Tampa Bay Rays in first place of the AL East. The returns of Cole and Rodon could provide a timely boost as the club looks to right the ship in what looks like will be a competitive race all season.
