Yankees rediscover their power in historic victory over Rays

The New York Yankees are finally back on track.

Their 13-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday was their fourth consecutive victory, and they did so in convincing fashion, tying a franchise record for the most home runs in a single game (9).

More impressively, this was the second time this season that the Yankees reached that figure after setting a franchise-best on March 29 in a 20-9 home win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

With Tuesday's performance, they're the first team in MLB history with multiple nine-home run games in a single season:

“To do it twice (in a season), that’s remarkable,” Boone said, per The Athletic. “And there were some (home runs) that were seriously hit, too. Just a really impressive offensive showing against a team that obviously is not always easy to score runs against.”

Six Bronx Bombers went yard, including Ben Rice, Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr., who had one dinger each, and Jose Caballero, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger, who hit two each.

The Yankees made a statement early, with Judge, Bellinger and Stanton going back-to-back-to-back in the first inning off Rays right-hander Shane Baz, who surrendered five homers overall.

Judge has 40 home runs this year, which is good for fourth in MLB. The 33-year-old became just the sixth player in Yankees history to record consecutive 40-homer seasons, joining Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Jason Giambi and Curtis Granderson.

The record for most home runs in a single game still belongs to the 1987 Toronto Blue Jays (10), but New York certainly has the firepower to tie or break that mark.

The win gave the Yankees a one-game lead atop the American League wild-card standings, a much-welcome turn of events after dropping seven out of ten games to begin August.
