J.C. Escarra thought he was about to get let down easy.
Instead, he got the best news of his life.
In a video shared by the New York Yankees on Saturday, manager Aaron Boone called Escarra into his office for what looked like the classic end-of-camp conversation. Boone started by saying this was going to be difficult.
“We’ve got a lot of catching depth,” he said. “This is hard…”
Boone blathered on for a while and then he grinned.
“Nah, you’re going to the big leagues.”
Cue the celebration.

Escarra, 29, has been one of the most feel-good stories of Yankees camp this spring. A former 15th-round pick by the Orioles in 2017, he’s bounced around organizations, converted from first base to catcher, and — at one point — even worked as an Uber driver to keep his dream alive.
Now, he’s headed to Yankee Stadium.
Escarra forced his way into the conversation with steady defense, a solid bat, and a calm presence behind the plate that impressed both pitchers and coaches. His journey to Yankee Stadium was hard-earned. Cut by the Orioles as an infielder, he played independent ball and in Mexico and Puerto Rico.
He drove an Uber to make sure his mortgage was paid.
The video of Boone delivering the news has already started making the rounds. Fans and teammates love the genuine emotion and the brief moment of misdirection. It was pure emotion for Escarra when Boone finally broke character and told him the good news.
He thanked Boone for the opportunity.
“You earned it,” Boone said. “You earned it.”
In a spring filled with injury updates and roster uncertainty, this was something everyone could finally feel good about at Yankees spring training.
Escarra is headed to The Show.
And this time, he’s not driving himself.
