Yankees’ Rotation Suffers Another Injury Setback With Marcus Stroman

Marcus Stroman’s return to the Yankees rotation remains on hold after another setback with his injured left knee. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters before Sunday’s game that Stroman “is still experiencing some discomfort with the knee” following a simulated game Friday at the team’s complex in Tampa, according to Newsday’s Erik Boland.

Stroman, who has been sidelined since April 12 with left knee inflammation, had made incremental progress toward a rehab assignment until now.

The lingering soreness continues to stall his recovery timeline, which initially had him returning as soon as the 15-day injured list time was up at the end of April.

The 34-year-old right-hander threw a bullpen session earlier in the week before testing the knee further during Friday’s simulated outing, a step that was expected to determine if he could begin facing live hitters in a minor league rehab stint.

Instead, Boone’s update leaves Stroman’s status uncertain as the Yankees continue to manage a rotation thinned by injuries.

Gerrit Cole remains out for the season, and Luis Gil is trying to work his way back from a lat injury. With Stroman unable to progress as hoped, the Yankees may be forced to lean further on younger arms like Will Warren or explore outside options as the trade market begins to take shape.

In fact, on Sunday, the Yankees had to use reliever Ryan Yarbrough as an opener for the second time. The Yankees designated Carlos Carrasco, but the veteran cleared waivers and remains with the organization.

Stroman last pitched for the Yankees on April 10 and he was struggling. He has an 11.57 ERA in three starts, spanning 9 1/3 innings.

Until he’s pain-free, his return date remains a question mark. That put extra stress on an already thinned Yankees rotation and well-used bullpen.
