Yankees share positive update about cameraman injured during Orioles game

There's more good news about the cameraman injured by an errant throw during Wednesday's game between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

According to A.J. Herrmann of YES Network, the television home of the Yankees, cameraman Pete Stendel is at home resting after he suffered an orbital fracture when he was struck in the head during Wednesday's contest. Stendel's family added that Pete "appreciates everyone's support."

It's unclear when Stendel will return to work in the Bronx and also for SNY, the cable home of the New York Mets.

Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson was attempting to complete a double play in the bottom of the fifth inning of Baltimore's 6-3 win on Wednesday when he sailed a throw well over first baseman Ryan O'Hearn. Stendel, working inside a Yankee Stadium camera well, required attention from medical personnel after he fell to the ground upon being hit by the ball.

Ultimately, the game resumed following a delay that lasted over 15 minutes, and Stendel flashed a peace sign as he was carted off the field. Fans honored Stendel with "MVP" chants, and YES later informed viewers on Wednesday night that he was conscious as he arrived at the hospital.

"Pete is the ultimate teammate," YES Network studio personality Jack Curry said about Stendel during Wednesday's postgame show. "He was not even scheduled to be the camera person in the first-base area tonight, he was filling in on a very hot and humid night and making sure others could get a little bit of a break. We send all the best to Pete. Everybody who has ever met Pete loves this guy – hard worker, fun guy to be around."

A shaken-up Henderson said after the game that he was "doing pretty fine" despite the incident and was sending his prayers out to Stendel. Both the Orioles (50-35) and Yankees (48-39) held wild-card playoff spots heading into Thursday's matchup between the clubs as they attempt to close ground on the first-place Tampa Bay Rays (57-32) in the American League East standings.
