Yankees should be wary of Trent Grisham’s success

New York Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham is playing like a superstar. If he keeps it up all year, he’ll be a hot commodity on the open market. However, the Bombers should be very careful when the time comes to consider bringing him back to the Bronx.

For now, though, Grisham is an absolute stud at the top of the Yankees’ lineup. After crushing a pinch-hit two-run homer on Wednesday to help New York take the final game of their series against the San Diego Padres, the 28-year-old Gold Glover is hitting a prolific .292/.376/.640 with 10 dingers and 20 RBIs.

His incredible start to the 2025 season has helped Yankees fans forget all about Juan Soto jilting the Yankees in free agency. But fans and Yankees decision-makers alike should take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

Grisham doesn’t have a track record of stellar offense. He’s a .217/.316/.395 career hitter. Even if he continues raking all year, there’s a good chance the season is an aberration.

Grisham may be a late bloomer. Or maybe the New York spotlight has elevated his game. What’s more likely, though, is that Grisham is a little more locked in than usual because he knows his first foray into free agency is coming up in 2026. And once he gets his bag, he might slip back into his subpar play.

Nothing against Grisham—it’s human nature. Now is his time to make sure his family is taken care of for generations, and he seems to be rising to the pressure. He should get a new lucrative contract, just not with the Yankees.
