Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton placed on 10-day IL with quad strain

The New York Yankees announced Monday that four-time All-Star slugger Giancarlo Stanton has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain.

The move is retroactive to May 14.

Over the weekend, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he didn't think Stanton's injury was anything "overly significant." That could still be the case, but the injury is clearly worse than initially believed.

Stanton's injury comes as the veteran was just starting to heat up for the Bronx Bombers. The 31-year-old has the highest exit velocity in Major League Baseball, according to Statcast, and is slashing .282/.347/.534 with nine home runs and 24 RBI.

It'll be hard for New York to replace Stanton's production. However, the team should be able to keep the momentum going against the struggling Texas Rangers this week.
