Yankees suddenly facing good Paul Goldschmidt problem

On Monday, the New York Yankees began their road series against the Cleveland Guardians with a solid 7-5 win. The Yankees are looking to unheralded sources of offense to hold down the fort as they prepare for a lengthy period of time without Aaron Judge in the lineup as he deals with a rib injury.

On Monday, the Yankees got a big game out of Paul Goldschmidt, who set the tone early with a home run to give New York a lead in the first inning.

Goldschmidt has been balling lately for the Yankees, as evidenced by his statistics of late.

“Paul Goldschmidt over his last 31 games:.306 AVG, 14 XBH, 24 RBI, .369 OBP, .568 SLG,” reported the MLB Network on X, formerly Twitter

“I think when you look at him, 38 years of age and still balling, understanding what his role is. He took a paycut, a one year, $4 million deal to come back to the Yankees and kind of be that veteran guy who can show some leadership… I think the most important thing is he’s been doing this for 15 years,” said former player Cliff Floyd.

Goldschmidt has been in and out of the lineup this year as the Yankees look to manage his workload at the age of 38. However, his uptick in production over the last several weeks, combined with the team’s need for more hitting in the wake of Judge’s injury, could force manager Aaron Boone to give the veteran more opportunities over the next chunk of the season, at least until his numbers start to taper off.

Overall, the Yankees currently sit at 39-26 on the season. They will look to become the first AL team to hit the 40-win mark when they continue their series against the Guardians on Tuesday.
