Yankees Veteran Outfielder Elects Free Agency

He's gone.

The New York Yankees' outfield depth has taken a hit.

Outfielder Greg Allen has elected free agency after being designated for assignment earlier in the week.

Allen was designated for assignment, as the Yankees had to make room for top prospects Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira on Tuesday.

While Allen was offered an assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he declined and instead decided to become a free agent. Allen can now pursue big-league opportunities with other organizations.

Allen was with the Boston Red Sox earlier in the summer, but missed two months due to a right hip flexor strain. The 30-year-old only spent 25 games with the Red Sox, making two starts and accumulating 11 plate appearances during this span.

Allen hit .217 (5-for-23) with the Yankees, stealing three bases and scoring six runs in 22 games. He brought speed and defensive versatility to the bench, but hardly played.

The other move the Yankees made to clear room for Peraza and Pereira was placing outfielder Billy McKinney on the 10-day injured list with lower back spasms.
