Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated that he wanted the league to look into an on-field interaction between his second baseman and an Atlanta Braves coach Saturday night. The incident, caught on the YES Network cameras, had Chisholm jawing back and forth with Braves coach Eddie Perez.
After Chisholm reached base and made his way to second. Braves coach Eddie Perez was spotted pointing to his head and yelling something in Chisholm’s direction. The Yankees star didn’t take kindly to it, and by the time he was standing on third, he was openly taunting the Braves bench, pretending to cry, wiping his eyes, and pointing across the diamond. Third base coach Luis Rojas stepped in, motioning to the Braves to cut it out.
So what exactly happened?
According to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, Perez believed Chisholm was giving signs from second. His version? The gesture was a misunderstanding. “When he pointed to his head, he was telling Jazz, ‘Think,’” Bowman reported. “He wasn’t saying anything about throwing at his head. Eddie said, ‘I like that kid.’”
Aaron Boone was a little less certain.
“I’m not entirely sure, not entirely sure, but I know they were saying some things that will probably be looked at and should be,” the Yankees manager said postgame. “Was he saying he’d hit him in the head? Yeah, there’s some... I don’t know exactly what was said, but they were talking about stuff like that.”
Intentional or not, Chisholm clearly felt something crossed the line—and he wasn’t shy about letting the Braves know it. One thing’s certain: the edge he brings isn’t just speed and swagger. It’s fire. And on Friday, it flared.
