Christian Yelich doubled home a run in the seventh inning to notch his 100th RBI of the season, and the Milwaukee Brewers pulled away late to beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Thursday night, completing a three-game sweep.
Yelich went 2-for-4 and reached the 100-RBI milestone for the first time since 2018, when he drove in 110 runs and won the NL MVP. His double capped a three-run seventh inning that broke a 2-2 tie.
Jackson Chourio opened the decisive frame with a ground-rule double off Angels reliever Luis García (2-2) and scored on Brice Turang’s RBI single. Yelich doubled in Turang, and William Contreras returned on Andrew Vaughn’s sacrifice fly.
Quinn Priester was dominant early, striking out eight of the first nine batters he faced and not allowing a baserunner until the fifth inning. That’s when Jo Adell drew a walk and Luis Rengifo followed with a two-run homer — the only blemish against Priester. The right-hander struck out 10 and allowed just three hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings, though he left with Milwaukee trailing 2-1.
The Brewers tied the game in the sixth when Caleb Durbin delivered a two-out RBI single. Aaron Ashby (4-2) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win, and Jared Koenig closed it in the ninth for his second save.
Yusei Kikuchi allowed two runs across 5 2/3 innings for the Angels, who dropped their seventh straight game.
In the seventh, Milwaukee center fielder Blake Perkins made a diving grab at the warning track on Chris Taylor’s deep drive to keep the game tied.
The Angels put runners on the corners in the eighth, but Abner Uribe struck out Rengifo and Yoán Moncada to escape unscathed.
The Brewers have won all 19 games Priester has pitched in this season, including 16 starts and three outings in relief after an opener.
The Angels travel to Colorado, where rookie Mitch Farris (1-1, 4.80 ERA) will face Rockies right-hander Bradley Blalock (1-5, 9.00).
The Brewers open a series in St. Louis on Friday with Jacob Misiorowski (5-2, 4.35) facing Cardinals veteran Sonny Gray (13-8, 4.43).
