The actions of a team’s front office at the trade deadline can reveal a lot about their confidence in the roster. When a team is a buyer, it indicates faith in their current players; when they sell, it suggests doubt.
So, when the Diamondbacks front office kicked off the drama heading into the deadline by becoming the first team to make a move as they acquired A.J. Puk from the Marlins, Zac Gallen showed some gratitude.
After Gallen led Arizona to a 4-3 win against the Pirates on Friday, he noted, “It’s huge. It just reaffirms the product that we’ve been putting on the field … It’s just gonna motivate us to keep doing what we’re doing.”

Mike Hazen also hinted at further moves besides Puk. Hazen noted that “hopefully” Puk will not be the final move that the Diamondbacks make before the August 1st deadline. Last July, the Diamondbacks made three acquisitions- Paul Sewald , Tommy Pham, and Jace Peterson.
The Diamondbacks are now just one game behind the NL wild-card leaders, having won 15 of their last 22 games—tied for the most in MLB with the New York Mets.
