Zac Gallen’s solid start leads Diamondbacks to victory over Angels
Rob Schumacher/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

With their opening day lineup nearly intact, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Los Angeles Angels, clinching a 2-0 win.

Zac Gallen was excellent on the mound for Arizona, tossing 4.1 shutout innings, striking out 4 batters while allowing just 1 hit.

The Diamondbacks struck first with Christian Walker driving in Ketel Marte in the 3rd inning. Marte started the inning with a leadoff double, he is hitting .450 this spring at the plate.

In the 5th inning, Arizona added another run as Corbin Carroll delivered a base hit up the middle. Later, Carroll advanced to 3rd on a pickoff attempt gone awry and ultimately scored on a sacrifice fly by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Although there was no more scoring on the afternoon, the Diamondbacks did have their chances, as they went 1-8 with runners in scoring position.

This includes four runners stranded in the final two innings.

Nevertheless, Arizona’s bullpen ensured the lead held, collectively pitching 4.2 innings with contributions from five different relievers.

Up next for the Diamondbacks is a rematch against the Oakland A’s tomorrow at 1:10 pm.
