Zach Penrod Designated For Assignment

Zach Penrod was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers in order to make room on their 40-man roster for Blake Snell’s return.

The Dodgers acquired Penrod from the Boston Red Sox in June as injuries to their pitching staff began to pile up. At the time of the deal, L.A. had 13 pitchers on the injured list.

The Dodgers’ trade for Penrod came after the Red Sox designated him for assignment in the wake of sending Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

Penrod never pitched for the Dodgers but did end up making seven appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 2-0 with a 4.85 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in 13 innings. Command was an issue as the 28-year-old walked 13 batters in comparison to seven strikeouts.

Penrod also made one appearance for the Red Sox’s Florida Complex League affiliate this year, and was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in six games (two starts) for Triple-A Worcester.

Penrod began his professional career by signing a Minor League contract with the Texas Rangers after going undrafted in 2018.

Penrod was released from the Rangers organization in June 2020 and went on to pitch in the Pioneer League (independent baseball) before signing with the Red Sox in August 2023.

The Indiana native made his MLB debut last season, pitching to a 2.25 ERA and 1.75 WHIP across seven appearances for Boston.

Penrod was designated for assignment in order to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for Snell, who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start against the Tampa Bay Bay Rays on Saturday.

Paul Gervase was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City as the corresponding move to Snell joining the Dodgers’ active roster.
