This past weekend at UFC Vegas 107, Maycee Barber (14-2) was getting back to where she felt she belonged and that was inside the octagon. Back in 2018 at just 20-years-old, Barber earned a contract on The Contender Series and she made it clear that she wanted to become the youngest UFC champion in history.
Barber started incredibly fast with three straight finishes to start her octagon career including one over Gillian Robertson. Barber suffered her first setback after that when she injured her knee in a bout against Roxanne Modafferi and lost a decision. It took a year for her to come back and when she did, she lost to Alexa Grasso.
However, after that loss, she won six straight fights including wins over former title challengers Jessica Eye and Katlyn Cerminara. Her most impressive win was her TKO win over Amanda Ribas. However, health issues outside the cage have kept her away since March 2024. This past Saturday, she was finally ready to return and hopefully put herself into serious title contention.
However, as the main event video package was playing and Barber was getting ready to make the walk, something happened. Barber walked back to her locker room as she was experiencing some issues and ultimately, she was not medically cleared to make the walk and compete. The UFC Vegas 107 main event was cancelled.
You really have to feel for Maycee Barber in this situation. She’s been through a lot over the last year and finally when she was ready to make the walk again, this episode happens. Erin Blanchfield made it clear that she’s not going to take another fight with Barber after this whole ordeal especially given the fact that Barber missed weight by half a pound.
I’ll be very curious to see what the UFC does next with Barber. Barber was supposed to fight Rose Namajunas last year but had to pull out of that fight. If Namajunas defeats Miranda Maverick at UFC Atlanta, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the promotion try to book Barber against Namajunas.
Jasmine Jasudavicius needs a top five opponent with her current win streak and I think that would be another really solid option. A rematch with Alexa Grasso or even a fight with Manon Fiorot could be additional options for Barber as well.
