UFC Freedom 250 was expected by many to be a showcase for two of the sport's biggest stars. Instead, the event turned into upset city as both Alex Pereira and Ilia Topuria suffered surprising defeats in the co-main and main event.
For Pereira, the loss marked his first appearance at heavyweight after capturing UFC championships at both middleweight and light heavyweight. The Brazilian was stopped via second-round TKO, but the finish quickly became one of the most debated moments of the night after replay footage appeared to show multiple strikes landing on the back of his head during the finishing sequence.
Speaking in a video shared by Championship Rounds, Pereira addressed the loss and the controversial stoppage.
"Unfortunately, that hand came in, that jab," Pereira said. "But I would say it was a lucky jab, a lucky punch."
While Pereira acknowledged the jab hurt him and created the opening for the finish, he believes the follow-up strikes played a significant role in the outcome.
According to Pereira, concerns about strikes to the back of the head were discussed before the bout during the rules meeting with officials.
"Before the fight, the day before, there was a meeting of rules," Pereira explained. "I said, man, look, This guy has a history of throwing punches to the back of the head and elbows there. I saw that in some videos, so I was worried."

Pereira claimed the referee even reviewed legal and illegal target areas during the meeting, but failed to intervene when he believes repeated fouls occurred during the fight.
"If you watch the videos, several punches there, several elbows," Pereira said. "I believe that if it weren't for these punches there, I would hardly be in that situation."
The former champion argued that the official should have stopped the action if illegal strikes were being thrown.

"In fact, a guy like that had to be punished," Pereira said while discussing the referee's performance.
Under the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, strikes to the back of the head are considered fouls. However, determining whether a strike lands on a prohibited area can be difficult in real time and often depends on the fighter's position and the referee's angle of view.
Adding fuel to the debate, several older videos featuring veteran UFC referee Herb Dean resurfaced on social media following the event. In one widely shared clip, Dean demonstrates the area of the head officials are instructed to protect and explains where strikes become illegal.

The video quickly gained traction among fans, many of whom questioned whether the same standard was applied during Pereira's fight. Others pushed back, arguing that determining whether a strike lands on a legal or illegal area often comes down to camera angles, fighter positioning, and the referee's perspective in real time.
As a result, the controversy remains far from settled. While Pereira believes the officiating played a major role in his defeat, the replay footage and resurfaced referee demonstrations have only added more fuel to an already heated debate surrounding one of UFC Freedom 250's most controversial finishes.
