Alexander Volkanovski has one of the best rivalries in the sport, and his rivalry with Max Holloway is something fans always talk about. The rivalry is different from others because it was not personal, but still generated huge buzz. Now, years after their trilogy fight, Volkanovski says fighting against Holloway made him more recognizable.
Volkanovski says he didn’t truly win over fans until the third fight with ‘Blessed.’ After the first two bouts, especially the controversial second fight, many fans still supported Holloway and saw Volkanovski as the one who spoiled the party. He explained that going into the trilogy, he embraced a new mindset during what he calls his “bald Volk” era. In his recent talk with Engage, he said:
“I felt like the bald Volk came with a whole new attitude, and that’s when Max had to face bald Volk in that third fight. That was the fight where I was just able to separate the two of us and show people that I’m the guy, and then all of a sudden I was widely accepted and started getting a lot of the love.”
According to Volkanovski, that performance is when fans finally accepted him and started showing him more respect and support. Indeed, the featherweight legend is still fighting for fans, winning in dominant fashion at 37, and calling out young challengers.
Many fans were calling for Alexander Volkanovski to retire before UFC 325, but the 37-year-old delivered a vintage performance against Diego Lopes. After such a dominant performance, Volkanovski doesn’t want to stop and calls out top featherweight contenders for his next fight. During the post-fight octagon interview, Volkanovski said: “Movsar, Lerone… whoever’s next is next!”
