Islam Makhachev will look to defend the UFC welterweight title in 2026.
The Dagestani star made more history inside the Octagon at Saturday’s UFC 322 pay-per-view, where he became the first fighter to follow lightweight title success with a crowning at 170 pounds.
To achieve that feat, Makhachev dominated Jack Della Maddalena at Madison Square Garden, pitching a shutout across five rounds in the Australian’s very first defense.
While the celebrations will be ongoing in the newly crowned champion’s team, talk in the MMA community is already turning to who could be the first to challenge him in 2026.
If the UFC wants to give Makhachev the toughest challenge, Alexander Volkanovski thinks they should grant his former two-time opponent’s wish to face a legend…
The featherweight king knows Makhachev’s talents first-hand, having had his own pursuit of multi-weight success spoiled on two separate occasions by the Russian standout. Volkanovski pushed Makhachev to the limit in their first fight before falling via knockout in the short-notice rematch.
With their history in mind, ‘Alexander the Great’ unsurprisingly had a keen interest in Makhachev’s showdown with his fellow countryman in New York City.
After watching the fight live while completing a ‘Hot Wing Challenge’ on his YouTube channel, Volkanovski named who he believes would give Makhachev the biggest challenge at welterweight.
The Australian snubbed Ilia Topuria, as well as UFC 322 winners Michael Morales and Carlos Prates, with his pick.
“(Kamaru) Usman’s there, Usman could be a problem,” Volkanovski said.
“We’ve seen how he did well against (Khamzat) Chimaev as well…and he doesn’t take unnecessary risks.
“I think Usman will be Islam’s toughest challenge,” he added.
It seems likely that Volkanovski will have his theory tested inside the Octagon in 2026.
Speaking backstage after a fighter from his management stable captured two-division glory at UFC 322, Ali Abdelaziz looked ahead to the next fight for the newly crowned welterweight champ.
Abdelaziz supported Makhachev’s desire to face Usman, which was no surprise given that he also manages ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’.
“Islam said he wants Kamaru Usman,” Abdelaziz told Full Send MMA. “Kamaru Usman is a very tough opponent and I represent him too and he’s not an easy night for anybody.
“He’s the real deal and Islam wants to fight the real deal,” he added.
