Two current UFC stars faced off in a submission-only grappling match.
Arman Tsarukyan may be focused on the UFC lightweight title but he’s still keeping himself busy by competing in other rulesets.
The #1-ranked contender at 155 pounds has been somewhat frozen out of the title picture after the interim title fight that will headline UFC 324 was announced.
Tsarukyan, who plans on being ready to go on January 24 just in case he’s needed, made his return to action on December 30.
His second grappling match of the month saw him cross paths with a fighter who wasn’t going to back down from the Armenian star.
Things got tense between Arman Tsarukyan and Shara Magomedov during the build up to their grappling match on December 30.
As a result, once their main event clash started, they immediately went after one another, with Magomedov reversing Tsarukyan’s first takedown attempt to take his opponent’s back early on.
The top UFC lightweight contender got back to his feet but struggled to take his Russian foe down against the ropes for several minutes.
Magomedov’s strategy of keeping his back to the ropes worked well until Tsarukyan picked him up for a huge slam to complete one of several takedowns in the six-minute round.
Despite the Armenian clearly getting the better of the exchanges, having forced Magomedov to remain defensive for the majority of the contest, neither was declared the winner due to it being submission-only.

The tension between Arman Tsarukyan and Shara Magomedov ahead of December 30 led to them putting some extra stakes on their grappling matchup.
If Magomedov won, his opponent would have to buy him an apartment in Armenia where the clash took place.
Tsarukyan, on the other hand, wanted a Rolex from the UFC middleweight if he was able to overcome a significant size difference and secure the win.
With neither man being declared the victor, it appears that their bet will be stricken from the record for now.
