Aspinall drops bomb on Jones fight: ‘Good news coming’

UFC Interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall drops some major hints about his fight against Jon Jones that could be happening very soon.

The UFC Interim heavyweight champion secured his title spot when he defeated Curtis Blaydes in UFC 304 in his last fight.

It seems as if Aspinall has been chasing Jones for months. As time has passed, details about the fight have been tightlipped but anticipation for the fight has increased.

In UFC 309, Jones defeated Stipe Miocic.

Jones had suggested fighting Alex Pereia as an alternative. Dana White did specify that the winner of Jones versus Aspinall could face Pereia. That was a possibility scenario before Pereia loss his UFC light heavyweight title to Magomed Ankalaev in UFC 313.

That was Pereia’s first defeat at light heavyweight.

This has now reduced the incentive Jones to face Pereira. Pereira also does not have a belt, which rules out a fight for light heavyweight.

Since his defeat, there’s less of a demand for Pereira.

All of that has paved the road leading Aspinall vs. Jones, unless Jones somehow announces his retirement from the sport.

“(Jones vs. Pereira is) off the table now. The Alex Pereira fight at heavyweight, or any other weight, really – I mean, I guess he could still fight him at light heavyweight, really. I guess. But it won’t be for a title. Yeah – Jon: There’s only one thing to do, mate. Sign the contract and let’s get a date going. We’ve seen last night Dana White was talking. Everything is now done on Jon’s side and the UFC now have to find a date and a venue, a place, location. So, we’re waiting for that. We’ve got some good news coming soon, hopefully,” Aspinall said.

Aspinall is confident that the deal will get done and we face Jones this year.
