Belal Muhammad Advocates For More Weight Divisions

Belal Muhammad’s comments reflect a growing sentiment in MMA. That the current structure of UFC weight classes leaves many elite fighters stuck in difficult situations too big for one division, too small for the next. The gap between divisions like 155 to 170 pounds and 170 to 185 pounds is significant, and for aging veterans or fighters with grueling weight cuts, the lack of intermediate options can shorten careers or compromise performance.

Muhammad, now 37, is in the later stages of his career but remains a top contender. Despite his loss to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315. He’s still one of the most technically sound and durable fighters in the welterweight division. His push for more weight classes isn’t just self serving. Which could lead to safer competition, more competitive matchups, and more title opportunities across the board.

Adding divisions like 165 lbs or 175 lbs, which fighters and fans have long pushed for could ease extreme weight cuts and improve fighter longevity. The challenge, however, lies in UFC’s willingness to dilute title prestige for the sake of depth something Dana White has been hesitant to do.

Still, Muhammad’s argument is more belts, more stars, more super fights is hard to ignore as the sport continues to evolve.

“The weight cut kills a lot of people. I know a lot of guys that kill themselves. But even if you add weight classes I think higher guys are going to try to go lower. It’s still going to be a bunch of mess, but you’re going to get a lot more title fights. So, why not add more weight classes?”

Change that needs to happen

Mohammed is absolutely correct. Creating more weight classes would create way more parity and would be able to allow certain fighters who are tweeners between weight classes to be able to thrive in their natural weight class. That’s something that Dana White should absolutely consider. By him implementing multiple weight classes it could possibly take the UFC to a level to another level that they have never even been yet. So this is absolutely a very intriguing idea to be able to implement more weight classes between the weight classes that they have currently right now.
