Belal Muhammad wants referees to get tough on eye pokes in MMA

Tom Aspinall was unable to continue after Ciryl Gane put fingers in both of his eyes at UFC 321 on Saturday night.

The fight was declared a no-contest before the UFC heavyweight champion was transported to a hospital, where he contemplated going blind in one eye and what it would mean for his fight career.

Belal Muhammad knows just how damaging eye pokes can be after his no-contest with Leon Edwards in 2021.

Belal Muhammad wants instant eye poke punishments

Belal Muhammad was left crying on the floor in agony after being eye poked at UFC Vegas 21.

Leon Edwards drew blood when he inadvertently stuck his thumb in the future welterweight champion’s right eye.

‘Remember The Name’ was blinded for about 40 minutes before his sight started to slowly come back.

Muhammad eventually got revenge as he beat Edwards over five rounds when they clashed for the 170lb title at UFC 304 in July 2024.

Still, he wants to see more being done about eye pokes after watching Aspinall vs Gane at UFC 321.

If they want to get rid of eye pokes, they need to take a point away instantly,” Muhammad tweeted on Saturday.

He added: “It has nothing to do with gloves, warn them both right when they enter the cage “if there’s an eye poke you lose a point” then guys will train for it .. Black Beast said he does it to catch his breath because there’s no consequences .. taking points right away will stop them or slow them down.”

Belal Muhammad’s next fight

Belal Muhammad hasn’t fought since losing his welterweight title at UFC 315 in May.

Jack Della Maddalena outpointed him over five rounds before agreeing to defend his new belt against Islam Makhachev at UFC 322 on November 15.

Muhammad will return to the Octagon in the co-main event of UFC Qatar on November 22.

Ian Garry stands in the way of Muhammad and the chance to win back the 170lb belt in 2026.
