Big Mo has opened up about what separates Michael Buffer and Bruce Buffer and the elements of their games that he’s incorporated into his own.
At just 29 years of age, the American has cemented his status as one of the best announcers on the planet.
Big Mo has gone from Denver car parks to introducing Mike Tyson against Jake Paul, and on Friday night, will achieve his dream of announcing at Madison Square Garden for the final fight of Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano’s trilogy.
The Californian is carving out his own unique style. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t take inspiration from two of the greatest of all time.
Amazing: Bruce Buffer tells incredible story of how he discovered Michael Buffer was his brother
Growing up, Big Mo adored combat sports, often watching in awe as Michael Buffer and Bruce Buffer introduced legends right before they engaged in battle.
Interestingly, the announcer has used separate components from each of their repertoires to construct his own style.
In an exclusive interview with Bloody Knockout, he explained: “I’ve always been asked what announcers I like, and I say the Buffer brothers are the gold standard.
“I like Michael’s class and presentation, and how clear his enunciation is; he’s a very polished speaker. I thought his voice inflections are correct, I like the way he sounded, the way he introduced and the energy he brings to boxing.
“But I do prefer Bruce’s energy. So, I prefer a little bit more animation, I don’t think I do it quite as much as Bruce does, I don’t think that necessarily caters to boxing as well as it does UFC, but I like to take elements from it.
“I think that Bruce is fantastic with how he engages with the fighters, which is something I like to do. A lot of announcers stay static, and they don’t look at the boxers. I like to move around the ring and share that intimate moment with them.
“In everything, you want to be yourself. I’ve gotten compared to Michael and Bruce a lot. People thought I was Michael’s son, I’m not. I respect them greatly, I’ve interacted with Bruce via email.
“I aim to be myself, but do I watch other announcers to see what works? Absolutely.”
In addition to announcing, Big Mo has entered into the acting sphere.
During a trip to Los Angeles, he ended up meeting a screenwriter from a blockbuster Margot Robbie movie.
This chance encounter opened the door for a huge opportunity.
Incredibly, Big Mo ended up securing a role in a Mike Tyson biopic.
