UFC Shanghai has gone through some late changes due to Brian Ortega’s weight.
The main event on August 23 between Johnny Walker and Zhang Mingyang looks likely to produce a knockout to close out the night.
However, for many fans, the most intriguing matchup was between two fighters that have been competing at the top of their weight classes for a long time.
Ortega’s fight with Aljamain Sterling being the co-main event earned some criticism from fans, with many believing that it was more than worthy of the main event spot.
With both men being ranked in the top 10 at featherweight, there were stakes for their futures at 145 pounds, though this has now been adjusted.
On Saturday night, Brian Ortega and Aljamain Sterling are now set to compete at a catchweight of 153 pounds.
Despite the promotion’s call to move the bout to being closer to a lightweight contest than a featherweight one, fans were still concerned for Ortega after he stepped on the scales.
The former two-time featherweight title challenger looked particularly depleted in the video that Dana White shared of the final face-offs before UFC Shanghai.
While ‘T-City’ has never officially missed weight for a UFC fight, he has had some difficulties making the featherweight limit in the past.
He was scheduled to face Diego Lopes at 145 pounds at UFC 303 last year before the fight was moved up a division the day before they collided.
On the day of the fight, Ortega withdrew from the matchup due to illness, which led to Dan Ige stepping in to the co-main event on a few hours’ notice.
In a post on his Instagram story following his weigh-in, Ortega seemingly referenced the support and concern that fans have shown, simply writing, “Love you guys” alongside a blank background.

While waiting for Brian Ortega to weigh-in, there were some reports coming out of UFC Shanghai that the matchup was canceled and that ‘T-City’ had allegedly suffered some form of health concern.
UFC commentator Brendan Fitzgerald didn’t say that anything like this happened when he told the story of what happened in a video on Instagram.
“Here’s how it actually went down in the co-main event. Brian Ortega and Aljamain Sterling was never actually off. It was never canceled. It was in doubt at certain times.”
Fitzgerald stated that there were some questions as to whether Ortega would be medically cleared for the fight and if he was able to weigh-in, what weight the fight would be held at.
