Brock Lesnar is close to completing a decade away from combat sports, but he is still remembered by fans and fellow athletes who would like to see him make a comeback.
His last fight took place in July 2016, when he defeated Mark Hunt at UFC 200 via unanimous decision. However, he was later suspended for failing a drug test and his victory was overturned.
While the former UFC heavyweight champion has shown no interest in returning to the cage since then, the calls haven’t stopped, from both boxing and MMA circles.
Eric ‘Butterbean’ Esch, who has dropped an astonishing 220lbs, is among the latest to throw his name into the hat, joining a growing list of men who still want a shot at Lesnar.
Brock Lesnar even appeared on a five-man shortlist of potential opponents for Eddie Hall following the strongman’s MMA debut win over Mariusz Pudzianowski in April.
And Butterbean – who has already dropped a reported 220lbs – reckons the clash would be just what he’s looking for.
“I’d love to fight Brock Lesnar. That would be a good fight,” Butterbean told Bloody Elbow.
“I wanna fight that people want to see and would be a challenge for me also. Brock would be a challenge, just like Jake would be a challenge. Tyson is in there. I’m just out there for a good fight that makes sense.”
Butterbean hasn’t fought since retiring from all combat sports in June 2013.
The 77–10–4 heavyweight veteran was unrecognisable when he ballooned up to 500lbs after calling it a career.
Now, having shed 220lbs, the 58-year-old is back on track and eager to step into the ring again.
Butterbean is not rushing into selecting his comeback opponent, though, he wants to make sure it’s the right fit.
“Somebody like Evander Holyfield, who is going to hit, run, and jab, wouldn’t be the fight for me,” he said.
