Bruce Buffer and Michael Buffer grew up without a clue who the other was.

The legends have established their status as icons of the fight game, with the elder of the two siblings announcing some of the biggest boxing bouts of all time, while his younger brother’s iconic, ‘It’s time’, has become the catchphrase that UFC fans crave before blockbuster contests.

Luckily for MMA enthusiasts, Buffer just confirmed he’s not retiring from the UFC anytime soon, so we won’t have to worry about the promotion without him for many a year.

The brothers are masters of their craft, which is extremely interesting, considering they didn’t even meet until adulthood.

How Bruce Buffer discovered Michael Buffer was his brother

One day, back in the Mike Tyson era, Bruce Buffer was watching television when something happened that changed his life forever.

When a man named Michael Buffer appeared on his television screen, it sent him on an incredible journey that he’ll never forget.

During an interview on ImPaulsive, he explained: “We were watching TV, Mike Tyson brought boxing back as a water cooler conversation on a Monday, the way the UFC is today.

“I’m watching, and on comes this handsome guy, nobody looked like Michael Buffer back then. He was great-looking, dressed like James Bond, doing his thing. I’m like, ‘Wow, what a job’.

“Then, they put his name on the screen. Back when I was in telemarketing, I saw every phonebook in the country, and as a habit, you look in the white pages. I never saw my name in any phone book in the United States. ‘What’s up’?

“So now, without saying to my dad or anything, I started ringing Bob Arum and Don King’s offices, trying to find out where he grew up. Who is this guy? It turned out he grew up in New Jersey, very close to where I grew up in Philadelphia.

“People started stopping me in the streets as he got more popular. They say, ‘Is that your brother, Michael Buffer, who does let’s get ready to rumble’? I go, ‘No, my brother is Brian’, who was my older brother. But it kept on happening.

“So, my dad and I are driving up north to San Francisco, and I tell him what’s going on, and I said, ‘Dad, do you have any idea who this guy is’? This is what I got, ‘I think that’s your brother’.

“He goes, ‘Son, I never told you, I’ve been married to your mom for 35 years, but in World War II, when I went overseas to do my part as a marine when I was 20, I was married briefly for nine months. When I came back, a son was born, a divorce ensued, and the last time I saw him was when he was two-and-a-half’.

“Michael was raised by foster parents. His mother passed away when he was six. In his own words, he had a beautiful Leave It to Beaver lifestyle; he had a great upbringing.”

With the mystery solved, it was time for the long-lost brothers to meet in person.

How Bruce Buffer met Michael Buffer for the first time

Keen to finally meet his sibling, Buffer suggested that his father make contact.

The UFC announcer continued: “So then, there was a Reseda country club in the valley here, where they filmed that first scene of Boogie Nights, that great long camera shot. They used to have a lot of great boxing events; the Goossen brothers used to put events on there all the time.

“Michael was there in a small arena, so my brother, Brian, and I, were like, ‘Why don’t you call and leave him a message’? And he did.

“Michael called back, they got together for lunch — his son. Then, we come together two weeks later; we meet at a little Italian place. I’m waiting for Michael to walk in, and I’m a fan of this guy.

“Here comes in my half-brother, who I’m a fan of, and I can’t even tell you the feeling of what happened, but we all got along great, it was amazing.”
