Cain Velasquez Assesses Stipe Miocic's Chances In Return Against Jon Jones At UFC 295
Barbara Perenic/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK

After a trip back to Abu Dhabi later this month, the mixed martial arts leader will return to the prestigious Madison Square Garden in New York City for a blockbuster numbered event.

The UFC 295 pay-per-view will feature two championship bouts, with both the light heavyweight and heavyweight belts on the line. The latter gold will be defended by the legendary Jon Jones, who returns for his second outing of the year.

"Bones," a former two-time kingpin at 205 pounds, made his comeback at the higher weight this past March. He completed two-division glory by dominantly submitting ex-interim titleholder Ciryl Gane inside one round.

In his first attempt at a successful retention of the heavyweight strap, the Rochester native will enter the Octagon for a long-awaited showdown with returning divisional great Stipe Miocic.

The Ohio native hasn't been in action since March 2021, when he was unseated from the throne by way of a brutal knockout against Francis Ngannou. With his layoff and age in mind, not many appear to be giving Miocic a chance of victory come November 11.

One man who knows a thing or two about winning heavyweight gold, however, isn't fully counting him out.

Velasquez Gives Miocic 'Puncher's Chance' Versus Jones

During a recent interview with The Schmo, former two-time UFC champion Cain Velasquez gave his assessment of the upcoming title collision between Jones and Miocic at MSG next month.

Velasquez, who defeated the likes of Cheick Kongo, Brock Lesnar, and Junior dos Santos during an illustrious career in the sport, sits alongside Miocic as one of few to have held the UFC's heavyweight gold on more than one occasion.

On paper, he thinks a third reign for the 41-year-old American is unlikely. But if anyone can make good on a "puncher's chance," Velasquez thinks it's Miocic.

"I mean, Jon Jones is the greatest ever, the greatest ever that you're ever gonna see," Velasquez said. "Obviously a complete fighter, mentally the stronger. The strongest competitor that you're gonna face out there. But there is always that puncher's chance. There's always that maybe chance. That's what continues to bring interest in the fights.

"Stipe, the greatest heavyweight as well out there, arguably. He brings so many threats to Jon Jones as well," Velasquez continued. "Obviously, your gut will tell you that Jon Jones may come out of this on top. But there's always that maybe, and Stipe's one of those guys that can bring out that big maybe in this fight as well."

Miocic has certainly appeared unfazed by the considerable doubt surrounding his ability to regain the title in the MMA community. The Ohio native has responded by warning those betting against him of impending losses.

He'll look to bring that to fruition by upsetting the odds come UFC 295 next month, when he'll make the walk to the Octagon with heavy talk of retirement swirling around both him and his opponent.
