Israel Adesanya wants a rematch against Sean Strickland as we look at whether Izzy can avenge that loss.
Adesanya’s career is at a crossroads, as he is experiencing the worst form of his career. He has lost his last three fights, the first of which happened against Strickland at UFC 293. Sean dropped Izzy on his way to a one-sided unanimous decision win. Adesanya had the chance to get the belt back immediately when he faced Dricus Du Plessis in his next fight. However, Adesanya experienced a submission loss, leaving him facing serious questions over his career. To add further strain on his career, Nassourdine Imavov knocked out Adesanya in his last fight. Adesanya now wants the Strickland rematch, as we look at how he could approach it.
“I want to [fight Sean], but he’s busy at the moment with other stuff, so that’s him. But we’ll see. I’ll pick a fight this weekend,” Adesanya said
Adesanya would have to be more aggressive to avoid being backed up, as he had been in the first fight, which limited his movement and striking. Adesanya must take control of the center to stop Sean from dictating the pace. Izzy will have to find a balance between moving forward and starting the combinations to avoid getting countered. This could involve varying the angles of his attack. Sean’s high guard and pressure makes it tough to land on him cleanly. Adesanya can do this by using lateral movement, feints to switch up the angles and find openings.
Adesanya could use his jab more rather than relying on his kicks. The jab will allow Izzy to maintain the distance and set up combinations by making space. Sean has shown that he can be susceptible to straight punches, which Izzy could do from the southpaw position, while also mixing things up by hitting the body. There is also the mental struggle that Izzy will have to deal with. Three losses on the spin will mean his confidence levels are not the best. However, if he can adjust to Sean’s style with an underdog mentality, Izzy can trouble his man.
