After his loss to Craig Jones on Sunday, Chael Sonnen told fans “I forgive you,” believing there had been a misunderstanding regarding his defeat.
The former UFC middleweight and light-heavyweight challenger’s wrestling background, coupled with a four-hour fight-day journey, proved no match for Jones’ world-class jiu-jitsu.
Sonnen was quickly put to sleep by Jones in their first exchange, and when he protested the outcome, a rematch was called. However, the second bout ended much like the first, with Sonnen once again choked out by the Australian.
After a tough night at the Craig Jones Invitational, Chael Sonnen has responded to fans in his own unique way. Taking to social media, he told them, “I forgive you,” suggesting there had been some misunderstanding about what happened.
He initially claimed that “The contract said 3 out of 5,” before adding: “The first thing you do in a position like that is relax. That’s all that was. I don’t blame anybody and I’m not upset. Misinterpretations happen. I forgive you.”
Chael Sonnen, despite his 30-18-1 MMA record, famously asserts himself as “undefeated and undisputed.”

Renowned as one of the sport’s top trash-talkers, he has endeared himself to fans over the years, particularly after adopting the villain persona during his fighting career.
Sonnen agreed to step in on short notice after Olympic gold medallist Gable Steveson withdrew due to injury. Despite his last MMA competition being in 2019, ‘The American Gangster’ continues to train, focusing particularly on wrestling.
Steveson’s withdrawal drew criticism from Jones, who accused him of trying to damage the event. The wrestler is scheduled to make his MMA debut on September 12 but was unable to participate on August 31.
