Charles Oliveira has a chance to make history in his main event title fight at UFC 317.
The Brazilian fighter is aiming to regain the UFC Lightweight title in the main event of the card, which pits Charles Oliveira against former UFC Featherweight champion Ilia Topuria.
Their title match came about after Islam Makhachev vacated the UFC Lightweight title, leaving the division with no champion, but two contenders hungry to fight.
Submission specialist Oliveira will be hoping to submit the undefeated former champion, which would help him equal Jim Miller’s incredible record at 155 lbs.
The main event of UFC 317 could see Oliveira regain the UFC Lightweight title, but also break one of the most impressive records in the UFC.
The Brazilian has won ten fights via submission, the second most in the history of the Lightweight division in the UFC.
He kicked off his career by forcing Darren Elkins to tap out to a triangle armbar in 41 seconds, which kicked off a UFC career that saw him win and lose in various fights via submission.
Oliveira boasts 10 wins via submission out of his 35-1-1 record, including his UFC Lightweight title defense against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269, which earned the performance of the night award.

However, that still puts him one below Jim Miller, who actually forced the Brazilian to tap out to a knee bar in their bout at UFC 124.
Oliveira avenged that loss by doing the same to Miller in 2018, locking in a rear-naked choke that forced him to submit after just 75 seconds of action.
He will have one eye on the record at UFC 317, although Oliveira will have to smash another record if he wants to beat Topuria.
Oliveira will need to break Topuria’s undefeated record in impressive fashion if he wants to match Miller’s submission record in the Lightweight division.
Topuria is 16-0 in MMA so far, with his last two fights ending in a knockout victory for the Georgian.
“La Layenda” moved up to Lightweight after battering Max Holloway at UFC 308, retaining his UFC Featherweight title before vacating the belt soon after.
Topuria backed his undefeated self to go toe-to-toe with Islam Makhachev, although the former UFC Lightweight champion mimicked the Georgian and vacated his own belt to jump up weight classes.
#2-ranked Oliveira was drafted into battle with Topuria for the vacant belt. With a much younger opponent with an unblemished record, the Brazilian will have to be at his best to tap out Topuria and match Miller’s mighty record.
