Chimaev Hints At Next Fight: Imavov Is The Target
Per Haljestam-Imagn Images

UFC Middleweight Champion Khamzat Chimaev has suggested that his next fight will be against Nassourdine Imavov.

Chimaev secured the biggest win of his career by defeating Dricus Du Plessis in a unanimous decision to secure the middleweight belt at UFC 319 in August. However, Chimaev disclosed that he suffered a foot injury, which will keep him out until next year. The champion confirmed that he would likely be in contention for a return after the observation of Ramadan which would be towards the latter end of March.

Meanwhile, Imavov has continued his rise in the division with a series of impressive wins. He is undefeated in his last six fights, beating the likes of Caio Borralho, Israel Adesanya, and Brendan Allen. Imamov confirmed that he is waiting for his title shot, with Chimaev now appearing to be on board with it.

The Approach

Chimaev’s primary objective will be to establish the threat of the takedown early. He will use his high-pressure and striking to disguise his level changes. Every feint, jab, or power punch will be a set-up for a clinch or a shoot. The moment he forces Imavov to worry about the takedown, it will slow the challenger’s striking. Once the fight hits the canvas, Chimaev’s size advantage and grappling will be used for positional dominance. His submission threat is always present. The objective is to deplete Imavov’s energy with every passing minute of top control.

Imavov’s strategy will be built on controlling the distance with his footwork and straight shots. He will use his jab and teeps (front kicks) to the body to keep Chimaev at the end of his range, punishing the champion’s relentless forward movement. Imavov’s success hinges on his ability to nullify Chimaev’s wrestling efforts. If taken down, his goal is not to grapple, but to quickly “wall-walk” back to his feet. The worst-case scenario for Imavov is spending more than one minute of accumulated control time per round on his back. His long-term success against high-level grapplers like Caio Borralho shows that he can stifle takedown attempts.
