The backstage incident between CM Punk and Jack Perry could be the catalyst for the 'Real' World Champion's exit from AEW.

During AEW All In 2023, the two got into a confrontation backstage, which reportedly resulted in Punk using a chokehold on the former FTW Champion. During Perry's match with Hook, Jack made reference to using real glass, a nod to Punk being against the use of real glass for an episode of AEW Collision.

Punk Threatens to Quit

PW Torch reports that the incident happened right before Punk's match with Sama Joe. AEW officials were alerted to the possibility of the show’s match order needing to be changed, and there was a brief concern that the start of the show would have to be delayed due to the backstage incident.

Punk was able to regroup himself in time for his scheduled match, which saw him emerge victorious against Samoa Joe. Wade Keller was told that in the heat of the moment, Punk threatened to “quit” due to his frustration with the incident. Both Punk and Perry are reportedly facing suspensions

CM Punk and Jack Perry

The issues between Punk and Perry began after the latter wanted to use real glass for a spot, and Punk made it clear that he wouldn't tolerate such a violent act on Collision when safer alternatives were possible (e.g. Sugar Glass.) Keller reports that there was a belief a few weeks ago, that Punk's allies put out the story to make Perry look bad, and that Perry's comment during his match at All In was his attempt to 'fire back.'

Punk's initial comment against the use of real glass on Collision was seen as an example of Punk and like-minded people trying to 'dial back' on gratuitous violence and high-risk situations so that when there is more violent imagery or more high-risk content in matches, it will mean more and resonate longer.

Perry's line during the All In Zero Hour pre-show was said to be unscripted and unapproved by AEW management. While Perry is expected to receive more blame from management, Punk is not seen as "blameless" by higher-ups.

Punk reportedly told those close to him that he "hates this place" after what transpired at All In. Click here to find out more.
