Stephen A. Smith ruffled plenty of feathers this week while discussing Lane Kiffin's future at Ole Miss.
Even though Ole Miss is firmly in contention for a spot in the College Football Playoff, the program is worried about losing Kiffin to a rival SEC program. He's been linked to the job openings at Florida and LSU.
During this Wednesday's episode of "First Take," Smith suggested that certain recruits would have no interest in going to Oxford. For that reason, he thinks there's a good chance Kiffin will leave Ole Miss in the coming weeks.
"I'mma bring it home, aight. He's in Oxford, Mississippi, okay? Leave it to me, I'll say it, the brothers ain't trying to come to Oxford, Mississippi, for the most part, compared to Gainesville or Baton Rouge, Louisiana," Smith said, via OutKick. "Let's just call it what it is."
ESPN's Paul Finebaum addressed Smith's remarks during his self-titled show later that Wednesday. He made it clear that he doesn't agree with the charismatic "First Take" personality.
"I realize a lot of you did not see what Stephen A. said, but he clearly made it racial," Finebaum said. "He clearly said, in his words, ‘the brothers do not want to go to Oxford, Mississippi,’ which has been proven to be completely incorrect. I’ve been to Oxford a million times and I think it’s terribly unfair to bring up echoes of yesteryear, the 60s, and try to portray Oxford as that type of place today. It’s not. The south has changed. You can make your own interpretation, but to dump on Oxford while saying Gainesville and Baton Rouge would be utopia was just baffling to me."
FOX broadcaster Tim Brando made it clear this week that he found Smith's comments to be incredibly divisive. He's hoping the ESPN star will realize that and change his tune when speaking about Ole Miss.
"Anyone that follows me knows how much I loathe embrace debate shows on morning and afternoon cable sports TV. There are many reasons, but the foremost 'exhibit A' as to why came courtesy @stephenasmith earlier today," Brando wrote on X. "The @Lane_Kiffin to LSU/Florida/stay in Sip’ story reached a racial low thanks to the @espn 100 million dollar talent. Saying, 'the brothers aren’t coming to Oxford for the most part.' Full disclosure, my two daughters (both SEC girls) @LSU & @OleMiss but most importantly I’m Southerner that’s got 5 plus decades in this business and began my National career @espn . His words were divisive, despicable and given his pedestal a true reflection of how the self proclaimed World Wide Leader views Mississippi and the south in general. I’ve respected Stephen A’s work ethic and intelligence and have stated such many times over. Words matter and his this morning were reprehensible and will never be forgotten."
As of now, Smith hasn't responded to Brando's comments. Maybe he'll do that later this week.
