With Conor McGregor’s comeback set for July, ‘Mystic Mac’ will be back in the spotlight too.
UFC president Dana White confirmed during MVP MMA 1 that McGregor’s return is official, headlining UFC 329 later this year.
McGregor will face Max Holloway in a rematch over a decade in the making, with this bout taking place at 170 pounds – a first for ‘Blessed’ in his career.
The timing of the announcement – made as Francis Ngannou was walking out to face Philipe Lins – raised eyebrows among fans. Many believed it was a calculated move, and White has since addressed those suspicions.
Fans had already been anticipating Conor McGregor’s comeback, with many expecting him to be part of the UFC White House event.
However, both he and Jon Jones were left off the card, reportedly because the UFC couldn’t maximise gate revenue from McGregor’s return at that time.
Now set to make his comeback during International Fight Week, there are high hopes that his fight will draw massive numbers and potentially become one of the most-watched MMA events of the year.
McGregor has always been known for his bold predictions, dating back to when he famously called his knockout of Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds back in 2015.
This time around, McGregor is focused on stopping Holloway with a right hook. In a video shared by MMAUncensored, he said:
“I want to knock him out with this hook.” The odds have opened up with McGregor as a significant underdog against Holloway.
He hasn’t entered a fight with such long odds since facing Floyd Mayweather in boxing when he closed at +350. This time around, he’s currently sitting even higher against Holloway.
Since their last bout, Holloway has stayed busy in the Octagon – eight fights, including five title fights, since then. This puts him far more battle-hardened than anything seen from McGregor lately.
