Conor McGregor is due for a meeting with the UFC this Monday according to reports.
‘The Notorious’ hasn’t stepped into the UFC Octagon since 2021 when he broke his ankle against Dustin Poirier.
All signs were pointing towards the Irishman returning to compete on the UFC White House event on June 14, but he was snubbed by Dana White who announced the card this past weekend.
But although he was omitted from the historic event, Conor McGregor was in talks with the promotion for his apparent return.
During the lead up to the announcement of the June 14 fight card, McGregor claimed that he accepted a fight against a no-name opponent.
Rumors then circulated that he was potentially set to fight Carlos Prates, despite ‘The Nightmare’ being an extremely dangerous fight.
This past Saturday following UFC 326, Dana White claimed that a deal for McGregor to come back is ‘not even close’.
And according to reliable journalist Ariel Helwani, the former UFC double champion in fact did accept a fight against Prates, but the promotion opted to go in a different direction.
“They did talk about Carlos Prates, that is true,” Helwani said on the recent episode of The Ariel Helwani Show.
“And my understanding is, (Conor) said, ‘Sure, let’s go’. Then they went in a different direction.”
Prates is now scheduled to take on former champion Jack Della Maddalena in the UFC Perth main event.
Also according to Helwani, ‘The Notorious’ Irishman is scheduled to meet with the promotion this Monday to discuss his return to the sport.
McGregor recently stated that he understands why he was left off the monumental card, as the promotion would be unable to make a big payday from him as there will be no gate.
Although fans still remain hopeful that the 37-year-old will return to action this year, there is still a way to go before that is official.
In fact, things aren’t expected to go very well considering the recent news regarding Jon Jones.
Jones was reportedly offered around $15 million to fight Alex Pereira on the UFC White House event, which was far away from $30 million, which is what Jones was hoping for.
And with McGregor being the biggest draw in the sport, it remains uncertain how much the promotion is willing to offer him, and if it will be anywhere near what he believes he deserves.
